chandigarh: there is a faint resemblance, but even the name doesn't ring a bell. then, as you try to place him, you're told this is popular punjabi singer shankar sahney's older brother. meet vivek sahney— who's also entering the fray with his debut music album all set to release in the near future. while vivek, 36, was also into music - having picked up the strains from his father, a music lecturer at government college, hoshiarpur, and professor sd sharma - he was first a lecturer in music (at sd college, hoshiarpur), then wrote a book called sangeet vivek, and finally quit it a-year-and-a-half ago to get into music direction. i've given music to many punjabi serials some of which are ishq, chuglian, aadam khor etc, says vivek. his debut album titled chandni raatein is a hindi album, and contains eight romantic songs, two of which are duets with a singer called sushmita chakravorty. on how he will create his own identity, vivek says he and shankar decided beforehand that he will sing hindi and the 34-year-old younger brother will stick to punjabi. our singing style is the same; i compose my own songs, in fact i compose for shankar too. but why did vivek wait till the age of 36 to sing commercially? shankar was always more into singing from an early age and i was behind the curtain, but he used to keep encouraging me and telling me to join the industry so now i have decided to do so. we are like friends. the album doesn't have a record company as yet, though talks are on with one big player. sahney will come up with a music video too, starting with the title track, chandni raatein. sahney also feels it's important to stay with the times, not too far ahead or behind. and as for starting out in the industry a wee bit late, he says, good music will always do well. here's wishing this mohali-based singer the very best. geetika_bhandari@indiatimes.com
